In Cursed Cabin Chronicles, we’re not just exploring horror — we’re exploring how horror brings us together! Whether it’s surviving against the odds in and of isolation or pushing back against forces greater than us, horror movies remind us of the power of collective action. In a world that often feels chaotic, these stories show that solidarity and resilience can help us navigate even the scariest of situations!

˚˖𓍢ִ໋ 🦇 SECTION I. SOLIDARITY IN HORROR ✧˚.🔮⋆

The horror genre is filled with reflections of shared fears and anxieties, and tends to mirror real-world dynamics of community-building in response to fear. Most horror films are based around stories of people working to survive or navigate some kind of threat — a dynamic we often face ourselves.

This month, we’re focusing on cabin horror films — those that tell stories of groups of people, isolated from help, confronting a shared external threat. Whether it's supernatural or imperial forces, collaboration and mutual care become essential.

We scream at the characters, "Do NOT split up!" because we intuitively understand that unity equals strength. We want to highlight how cabin horror films use collective fear as a catalyst for building solidarity — and how they illustrate the dangers of isolation during crises.

"Solidarity through Struggle"

A primary trope in cabin horror is the coerced isolation of a group of people -- forcing them into a scenario where survival hinges on their ability and willingness to work together. Their struggle for survival pushes personal conflicts aside, reminding us that our common humanity is stronger than our differences. Whether it’s taking turns standing watch, helping one another through injuries, or pooling resources, these films reflect the very essence of community-building: solidarity is born from shared struggle.

By depicting characters in situations where their survival depends on mutual aid and cooperation, these films mirror real-world processes of collective action. The fight for survival in a remote cabin can serve as a metaphor for how we build movements, organize against oppressive forces, and resist structures of power — proving that even in the most isolated, frightening moments, we’re never truly alone.

Just like in cabin horror films, communities in real life often find themselves battling larger, uncontrollable forces—whether natural disasters or systemic inequality. Mutual aid and collective action have been essential for communities to survive and push back against these threats.

QUESTION: Which cabin horror film has your favorite survival moment? How do you think those characters would fare without solidarity?

˚˖𓍢ִ໋ 🦇 SECTION III. Pumpkin Decorating✧˚.🔮⋆

Decorating Methods & Ideas

Together, we've compiled some ideas for pumpkin decorating to kick off the season with some fun inspiration!

Pumpkin Carving

Royalty-Free photo: Two Jack-o'-lanterns | PickPik

Probably the most common method of pumpkin decorating, this process involves the use of knives and other sharp tools to essentially cut (carve) shapes out of the pumpkin.

Although this method can get pretty messy, that's part of the fun!

Carving Tip: Instead of beginning your carving with a hole around the pumpkin's stem, try carving the hole on the bottom of the pumpkin! Watch how easily you're able to clean the inside!

Pumpkin Painting

A great alternative to carving pumpkins -- whether you're unable to or just don't want to -- is painting pumpkins!

Acrylic paint works especially well for this due to it's thick body and opaqueness!

There are no limits, though!

Here are some other creative materials you can use to decorate your pumpkins:

  • Glitter (Preferably biodegradable!)
  • Paint Markers
  • Spray Paint
  • Permanent Markers
  • Paper Mache
  • Pin-and-Thread
  • Rhinestones

REMINDER:

Once you decorate a pumpkin, your job isn't done just yet! Remember to be mindful with disposure at it's end!

If you're composting it, remember to remove anything that won't biodegrade!
